African American culture is multifaceted, but its distinct contribution to last century American culture has been musical. Blues, jazz and rap became global phenomena, but each was Black in its origins. In each case, folk or popular dance was integral towards the development of the musical form. Dance A brief history and traditions of African dance and movement focus on communication. According to , African music is really a way of life for the inhabitants of the culture. music is used to represent the experiences of life; a method to heal sick individuals; a mode of prayer towards the gods encouraging the growth of crops; along with a way to tell the stories and spread the traditions of the African culture. Ceremonial Ceremonial dance is an integral part of Africa’s history. According to , the value of music has encompassed every aspect of African life throughout time. Ceremonies that contain symbolic dance include transition from childhood to adulthood, alterations in status within the community and social changes for example marriage. Slavery In Africa, music played an essential role in everyday life. Africans used musicto celebrate special events such as birth, marriage along with other rites of passage. Additionally they use it to emulate everyday events for example planting and harvesting crops. When slave traders brought Africans towards the Americas, the slaves in order to stay near to their roots. Slave owners banned the dancing. Since the definition of dancing was to raise your feet, the slaves adapted and commenced using shuffling movements, waving their arms and moving their torsos. Minstrel Shows The plantation dances soon started to show up on stage through minstrel shows. The very first time, African-American dance was introduced to white audiences in good sized quantities. Black and white performers composed the minstrel shows. They were often making fun from the black population, depicting them as lazy and ignorant. The white performers wore blackface when playing the function of an African-American. Although they were making fun of themselves, the black performers were drawing using their culture and displaying their original styles. Vaudeville eventually replaced minstrel shows, so that as African-Americans gained freedom and equal rights, the minstrel shows disappeared completely. Harlem Renaissance Success within the theater continued and played a huge role in legitimizing black dance and its performers. The success raised the bar for black and white performers alike. The very first time, the white population started to imitate the dances they saw. “The Creole Show” introduced an extensive white audience to the dance known as the cakewalk. Along with the theater revival, African-American dance moved in to the clubs, and Harlem was the middle of the action. In the 1920s and ’30s, art, music, literature, were having a rebirth in the African American culture. Famous clubs such as the Cotton Club were the middle of the dance movement in which the African-American community experimented with dance styles for example swing, Lindy Hop and the Charleston.

Tab guitar lessons are one of the est ways to communicate something easily to a beginning guitar student. Because of the numbered notation and the symbols that represent the accents and rhythms, and because of the fact that so many people are familiar with these symbols from lots of computer use, the ability to play guitar from tab lessons can produce very efficient results.
The one thing that tabbed music as an example is lacking, is that tablature doesn’t define rhythmic properties so well. This is why it is always advised to listen closely to an accompanying album if you have one to distinguish learning the true rhythm, and this is also extraordinary for training the ear.
If you are just getting started and are looking for some basic tab guitar lessons,
you’re probably wondering where you should begin. I always suggest to my students to start with the basics like, the names of the strings, tuning a guitar, chords, and fingerings.
Tab guitar lessons aren’t always the best way to learn some thing, admittedly. For instance, tablature is very visual, but sometimes a complete diagram is absolutely necessary for computing something. Chord charts are probably the best way to learn how to play chords, and videos and/or photos can give you an even better grasp of proper technique.
If you perform in a rock band or country band of any kind then you should know that using professional backing tracks will help you be one step ahead of your competition. The right tracks can add to your sound and performance enormously and help you perform songs that you may not normally be able to play live. Whether you’re in a cover band, a tribute band, or an original band, tracks are going to give you that extra edge to thicken up your live sound.
Basically a backing track is a recorded piece of music. This is especially useful if you play in a four piece band that has no keyboard player for example. You wish to play a song that has a keyboard part and the backing track will play the keyboard part while the rest of the band does their usual thing. It will contain a click track for the drummer to play along to on one channel, while playing back the music on the other channel. The music and click track are separated by any number of ways, i.e. a “Y” type connector connected to the headphone output on an i-Pod to keep things easy. Simply plug a set of headphones into the click track side of the connector and run the music to the FOH (Front of House) board. The sound man will ensure the music track comes out of the mains for the audience to hear and out of the band’s stage monitor system at the same time so the band knows what they’re playing to. The drummer is responsible for having good enough meter to stay on the click track so the band does not lose their place in the song.
You can add parts like keyboards, horns, strings percussion etc. I’ve even seen people add bass lines and guitar lines. I personally am not a proponent of this. I don’t mind using tracks for missing instruments but I generally think that the band should make every effort to cover the parts that they can when on stage. I realize that when you start using tracks it becomes easier to overlook this but when you put too much on your tracks then your show becomes a sort of karaoke show really.
Professional backing tracks differ from MIDI backing tracks because they either use real instruments ar high quality VST instruments. I’ve seen people use MIDI files as a backing track and to be honest, they sound a little like a junky little keyboard you might buy for you kid at Sears or something. Using real instruments or VST instruments is the way to go. I’ve tried both. I like the idea of VST instruments because you don’t have to hire anybody to play the instruments for you. Simply assign the proper VST instrument to the track and you have pro sounding tracks. They usually come in an MP3 format so you can play them with an i-Pod.
Having these instruments with you on stage is going to help make your band sound more complete. Especially when you’re playing in a tribute band of some sort. Having all the right parts naturally makes the song sound better. This translates into the audience hearing a better show, giving your band a better response and eventually make you stand out from the rest.
Some people think that using backing tracks is a way to cheat on stage. I agree that if you put too much on them then there is an element of karaoke, however, it takes a certain amount of skill to be able to play to tracks so that should be considered as well. Use them for the parts you need, a complex vocal harmony or two, and that’s about it.
Professional backing tracks are enormously helpful in making your band sound better. Many people don’t know notice that fact that you’re using tracks and just realize that you sound great. This is what sets you apart from all the other bands in your circuit so consider giving them a try.
Steal This Album is the latest Rock CD released by the richly group System Of A Down and they have once again delivered a brilliant collection of tracks. I?m confident System Of A Down fans, and Rock fans alike will be pleased with this one.
This one literally grabs your attention right out of the gate with Chic ‘N’ Stu and won?t let go until the very last note of the very last song Streamline, which by the way is another great track.
Steal This Album is a pleasantly varied, mix of 16 tracks that are very well written and brilliantly performed songs by these clearly talented musicians. With many of the songs displaying a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Seemingly drawing from what I can only imagine are their own real life experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions of love, heartbreak, pain, failed relationships and unattainable romance. They?re all here.
If you?re a System Of A Down fan this is a CD your collection flat cannot be without. In fact, this is one of those CDs that you don?t even have to be a fan of lname, or even Rock to know is good. It?s just good music. Period.
While this entire album is outstanding some of my favorites are track 11 – Highway Song, track 13 – Ego Brain, and track 16 – Streamline
My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [ in “Stuck On REpeat”] is track 1 – Chic ‘N’ Stu. Wow!

Some may debate whether Bobby Pickett?s ?Monster Mash? or the beginning of Johann Sebastian Bach?s ?Toccata and Fugue in D minor? was the first music to unequivocally be associated with Halloween, while other?s may insist that nothing truly scary made an impact on the national consciousness until the Starland Vocal Band released ?Afternoon Delight?.
No matter what you associate musically with Halloween, the songs and themes that seem to pop up year after year around October 31st have certainly made an impact. Unlike Christmas Music, which has a rich tradition (aside from the deplorable ?Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer?), Halloween music is almost exclusively a product of the 20th century.
The number of purely musical releases are few and far between. Most recognizable Halloween themes were a byproduct from the film and television industry. Consider Ray Parker Jr?s ?Ghostbusters?, which was originally titled ?I Want a New Drug? and performed by Huey Lewis and the News. It not only rose to the top of the charts, but has also enjoyed many subsequent years of airplay because of the Halloween season, much to the chagrin of anyone who can?t appreciate the beauty of rhyming ?dose? with ?ghost?.
Even more popular are the sound bites from various horror franchises. Who can forget the busy yet astonishingly creepy theme to John Carpenter?s ?Halloween? or the scary, slow building strings that John Williams wrote for Steven Spielberg?s ?Jaws?? And dare we not include Celine Dion?s ?My Heart Will Go On? from the movie Titanic. Talk about frightening!
Indeed, movie and TV themes such as ?The Twilight Zone?, written and performed by Neil Norman & His Cosmic Orchestra, seem to resonate with more appeal than novelty songs written with monster mayhem in mind. Personally, I blame the song ?The Blob? which was written and performed by the ingeniously named The Five Blobs for setting a terrible precedence. It?s not easy to adequately convey the urgent need to ?be careful of the blob? with monotone vocals and music that sounds fresh from an Annette Funicello, Franky Avalon surf picture, but somehow all five blobs managed.
No matter what music puts you in the mood for frightening fun this Halloween season, it?s almost a given that you?ll hear it somewhere. Whether it comes from the television, the radio, or via the humming of that co-worker in the cubical next to your who you never were all that sure about, Halloween music is indeed here to stay.
In case you are wondering why so many people make the investment in surround sound equipment, systems, and speakers there are many reasons for many different people. When it comes to surround sound, just as with many other things in life there is no one size fits all answer though for the most part the answer wouldn’t be because Mr. Jones has one (well maybe for some it would but for the most part it has more to do with wanting the system for a specific reason). There are a few common reasons that people decide to invest in surround sound and home theater systems and we will explore a few of them over the course of the next few paragraphs. Perhaps you will find the inspiration to get a surround sound system of your very own.
I will start with my very own personal reasons. First, when I was growing up my father was the manager of our local cinema. I spent many nights sleeping in the office and watching movies from the projector room and those are some of the fondest memories of my childhood. I will never forget watching The Return of the Jedi the night before it was released in the projector room with my father and a few members of the theater staff but there was nothing compared to watching the movies inside the auditorium. What was different? The sound. There is not enough that can be said about the quality of sound inside a theater and in days long past it simply couldn’t be imitated at home. However technology has been evolving over the course of the last ten years that is allowing us to bring the same quality of sound into our homes for a reasonable price. That is reason enough for me-to relive fond childhood memories.
Another excellent reason for bringing a surround sound system into your home is not so much for watching movies or enjoying the big screen as for the enjoyment of video games. Whether you are playing in the World of Warcraft or one of the many other wonderful worlds that have been created for online gaming enjoyment you will find that surround sound is a beneficial tool in keeping your character alive and intact. These games provide important clues that place you in the center of action with knowledge of what is going on around you if you take advantage of the audible clues, hints, and tips that are provided through ambient surround sounds.
If the reasons above aren’t enough to convince you to take a trip over to the bright side of the entertainment room, then perhaps the enhancements that surround sound provides to music will do the trick. Imagine hearing your favorite music with a fuller and richer sound, with the nuances completely defined and obvious to the ear. There is so much that can be said about the difference that surround sound makes (more with some types of music than others) and yet not enough that can be said about it. If you enjoy live recordings, imagine the ability to become a part of the crowd as the ambient sounds of being there fill your room. It’s truly an amazing effect for music.
As you can see there are many reasons to bring the wonders of surround sound into your home. I hope this article has shed some light on ways that it could improve your multimedia enjoyment and possibly given you some ideas for expanding your current use of your surround sound system.
Lil’ Wayne On Safe Sex
“Safe sex is great sex,
better wear a latex,
cause you don’t want that late text,
that ‘I think I’m late’ text.”
Artist: Lil Wayne feat. Kanye WestAlbum: Carter 3Song: Lollipop Remix
While graphic, Lil Wayne shows he’s a supporter of safe sex. Once again Wayne demonstrates that his lyrical skills are other worldly. The self proclaimed, “Martian” of hip-hop, knows just how to twist his words to make them have meaning on many while sounding wicked. Really. Take a second to re-read Weezy’s line above.
Teen pregnancy is something that has been at the forefront of a few of my conversations recently, so I figured I’d take some time to see what people thought about the topic. To be completely honest, I’m 25 and I could not even imagine life with a child right now. I’m happy to be doing a decent job taking care of myself (not to mention my girlfriend lives with I have to take care of her. Guys you know what I’m talking about…).
I’m just kidding ladies. Anyway, I think teen pregnancy is something the majority of society looks down on. For me, everyone is entitled to live their own lives. Personally, I don’t think that teens have been exposed to enough situations to be able handle the responsibilities of having a child. Now, that doesn’t mean they won’t be good parents. It simply means that at the point in their lives when they are pregnant, they may feel like they’re ready for it, but because they haven’t been exposed to some of the real responsibilities that accompany adulthood, they simply do not realize what’s in store for them. We spend so many years of our lives as adults with responsibilities. I wish that from a young age people would understand this, so that they can choose (or not) to live as many years as a kid as they possibly can.
In the article, Pregnant teens in America today, posted back in November when Sarah Palin announced that her daughter Bristol was pregnant, Marian Wright Edelman wrote about the opportunity to renew Americas interest in the topic. “This renewed focus on teen pregnancy is an opportunity for us all to commit to giving young people our support rather than stigmatizing and judging them. Bristol Palin?s pregnancy serves as a reminder that more babies are born to White, non-Hispanic teens than to Black, non-Hispanic teens. Perhaps this realization will spur more people to support policies that help teens stay in school and get the supports they need since there is often a double standard when pregnant teens are poor or minority. The fact is that no amount of finger pointing or name calling does teenage parents of any color – or their children – any good. What can help are solutions that steer all teenagers toward positive life choices so they avoid becoming pregnant in the first place.”
It just seems like getting pregnant is the cool thing to do these days. Whether it’s Jamie Lynn Spears getting pregnant at 16, Bristol Palin at 17, or the pregnancy pact of 17 high school girls in Gloucester, Massachusetts, teens today want to be pregnant.
What do you think is causing some of these girls to WANT to get pregnant?
Is it for the attention, is it because they think it’s cool because celebrities are doing it, or perhaps simply out of boredom (this last one is really scary)? Thoughts?
I’m hoping that some of these teens stop and think about some of the things they might miss out on before deciding to get pregnant. In order for this to happen, it’s going to take people like us to keep this topic in the forefront. It may also take some celebrities to come out and talk about the topic as well. They obviously have a much bigger voice than this blog does at this point. So, whether Weezy knows it or not, or even whether he cares or not (I hope he does), he has a few important attributes which allow his words to impact our youth. He has the reach needed to get a message to young people, he has their admiration, and most of all, he has he ability to deliver his message in a relevant way. By using his ‘other worldly’ lyrical prowess, he’s able to twist words like “latex” and “late text” to make people sit back and say “damn, did you hear that?”. At that point, people may stop for just a second to decipher what he’s really saying. Perhaps they will decide that if Weezy says I should wear protection, I’m gonna wear protection. Some may laugh when they read this because they don’t think kids really listen to anyone, let alone Lil Wayne. I challenge those folks to head down to New Orleans for a few days and ask some of the neighborhood kids if they know who Weezy F Baby is. I think you might be in for a surprise.
It’s important to keep the discussion going on this topic. Perhaps one person who reads this blog will think twice before getting pregnant. And if they do get pregnant, hopefully through reading this, they’ll at least take some time to really think about their decision and perhaps even do some research before deciding to jump feet first into adulthood.

Intellectual property’s tentacles are long and strong. Maybe the largest battlefield in IP is the music industry. Composer, producers, interpreters and license owners might get unexpectedly involved in legal battles regarding the misuse or abuse of a song of their property. Sometimes it is just something as little as a sample of the song but are legal frictions can deal with millions and millions of dollars.
Time is not an issue to underestimate when dealing with Intellectual Property. If by any chance, you use a song that was written forty years ago, and one of its owners is still alive, he/she can claim unfair use and suddenly, legal lawsuits can flood your desk. When working with someone else’s work, you should be extremely careful, no matter if you already got permission to use it.
In 1997, the British band The Verve sampled an orchestration in one of their songs, “Bittersweet Symphony”, from the Rolling Stones’ “The Last Time”. Prior the release of the album, the group did the proper negotiations concerning the license agreement with the Rolling Stones to utilize the sample. When the album came out, the song was a complete hit and reached number 23 on the Billboard Charts. After the sudden success of the song, the Rolling Stones argued that The Verve violated their license agreement because they use too much of the sample in their song. The Rolling Stones ended up collecting 100% of the loyalties of the song. Members of The Verve argued that the Stones got greedy when they noticed the sudden success of “Bittersweet Symphony”.
As a result, the Rolling Stones sold the rights over the “Bittersweet Symphony” and it became part of many commercials and publicities. Allen Klein, Rolling Stones’ manager licensed the song to Nike and to Vauxhall automobiles. Both brands utilize the melody for multi-million dollar television campaigns. Even worse, when the song was nominated for a Grammy, The Verve was not named as a nominee, but Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were. This is just a little example of moral rights dealing with intellectual property. The song hit top of the charts and not one members of The Verve enjoyed a cent of its success.
If these types of situations happen with amazing groups, who supposedly are not interested in more money, anything can happen to regular people who may get exposed to these inconveniences. Get acquainted with the respective regulations and laws so that no economical issues may come up in case you are planning to use someone else’s inspiration!
The most important thing to know when learning how to play guitar is practice! When learning new things by doing the work, simple. By saying that, it is by playing guitar, not pulling the strings with no reason at all. And when practicing, there is one thing one should never do and that is to never ever do it in a rush, but to take time and the results are guaranteed to come. The next important thing is to get organized while learning new stuff. To start at the beginning and start playing simple chords and stuff like that.
When playing guitar, it is recoemmended to remain as relaxed as possible, relieving the tension off. The tension in the body prevents from playing correctly and this is the wrong way.Practicing every single day, if that is possible, and never quit for a longer period of time is important too. This is not the way to learn how to play guitar, it does no good for playing. So, getting habitual at playing guitar is the way to go.The other important thing, when learning how to play guitar is to play the favorite music. When playing guitar, using a metronome is actually a must. It can and will improve timing and make playing sound better for sure. When finding a problem, it is recommended to overcome that problem first and only then going on to the next one. When becoming persistent and learning how to play guitar the right way, the results come quickly and playing gets better and better.Recent upheaval has affected the major record labels, powered by economic fluctuation, the MP3 revolution, online music piracy, home recording technologies and the amazing growth of the personalized listening experience (iPods, etc). Radio is losing its dominance as well… and is now just one of many forces that influence whose music one listens to. In fact, personal referrals from friends is just about the only force that remains unfazed by changes in technology… and, in fact, it’s probably more important than ever. This is great news for independent musicians (also known as “indies”). Anyone can make an album these days, and anyone can afford a web site… allowing them to take their music directly to their potential audience without interference from managers and labels. As a result, more and more talented and inspired artists are writing songs, recording albums and trotting their music out before live audiences. Most of these artists have also discovered that it helps to make some of their music available for free (and legal) MP3 download. By picking a good, strong song or two and putting it on their web site (or another site devoted exclusively to free music downloads), these songs become evangelistic forces for their music… working for them 24/7/365.
MP3 music is not hindered by geographical boundaries or time zones. In many cases (especially instrumentals), it’s unaffected by language differences as well. And it’s no longer even slightly unusual for an artist to record a song in their little bedroom studio and post it online… while someone downloads it and is listening to it in their car or bedroom on the other side of the world just a matter of hours later!Of course, there’s still a lot of mediocre (and even downright BAD) music out there. This is where the power of personal referral really kicks in. When someone discovers some music that really turns them on, and then shares it with their friends… the cream truly rises to the top. If they go a step further and purchase an album or pay to download more MP3 tracks, the artist is encouraged and can afford to put more time into honing their skills and creating new music. The good stuff thrives and the mediocre stuff dies off. independent music succeed. Support quality where you find it. Share it with your friends. Pick up a copy of their CD or pay to download more songs. Catch the artist in concert when you can. Send them an email telling them how much their music means to you. Everyone wins when we actively support great music!
